Borobudur
Ancient site
The largest Buddhist temple in the world, on the island of Java.
Borobudur on the island of Java was built in the eighth and ninth centuries from about two million blocks of stone. From above it looks like a giant drawing of the Buddhist universe.
Pilgrims walk round and round, up through nine levels, past 2,672 carved panels and 504 statues of the Buddha. For centuries the temple lay hidden under volcanic ash and jungle.
