Alhambra
Landmark
A palace of the Moorish kings on a hill in Spain.
For almost eight hundred years part of Spain was ruled by Muslims from North Africa, the Moors. Their last kings lived in the Alhambra, a fortress and palace above the city of Granada.
From outside it looks plain. Inside, the walls are covered in carved patterns as fine as lace, and water runs through courtyards and gardens. In 1492 the last Moorish king handed over the keys to the king and queen of Spain.
