Mont Blanc
Mountain
The highest mountain of the Alps.
Mont Blanc stands on the border of France and Italy and is about 4,800 metres high. The top is a cap of ice and snow, so its exact height changes a little from year to year.
In 1786 two men from the valley, Jacques Balmat and Michel Paccard, were the first to reach the summit. Many people see that climb as the beginning of mountaineering.
