Neuschwanstein Castle
Landmark
A fairy-tale castle on a rock in the Bavarian Alps.
King Ludwig II of Bavaria had Neuschwanstein built from 1869, high on a rock in the Alps. He wanted a castle like the ones in old legends, as a place to be alone.
It was never finished. The king died in 1886, having lived there for only 172 days. A few weeks later the castle was opened to visitors, and they have been coming ever since.
