Stonehenge
Ancient site
A circle of giant stones, and nobody knows exactly why.
Stonehenge is a ring of standing stones on a plain in the south of England. People started building it about 5,000 years ago, and kept changing it for many centuries.
The largest stones weigh about 25 tonnes. The smaller bluestones were hauled all the way from Wales, more than 200 kilometres away. Nobody knows for certain what it was for: a temple, a calendar, a burial place, or all three.
