Mount Etna
Mountain
The most active volcano in Europe.
Etna towers about 3,300 metres over the island of Sicily. It erupts almost every year: sometimes with fountains of glowing lava, sometimes with a slow stream that creeps down the slope.
Even so, hundreds of thousands of people live around it. The ash makes the soil very fertile, and oranges, lemons, grapes and pistachios grow on its sides.
