Forbidden City
Landmark
The palace of China's emperors, closed to ordinary people for five hundred years.
In the middle of Beijing lies a walled city of red walls and golden roofs. It was built between 1406 and 1420, and 24 emperors lived there, one after another.
Nobody could enter or leave without the emperor's permission: that is where the name comes from. Today it is a museum, and anyone may walk through its courtyards.
