Brandenburg Gate
Landmark
The gate in Berlin that stood for a divided city, and then for a united one.
The Brandenburg Gate was finished in 1791 as a grand entrance to Berlin. It is 26 metres high. On top stands a chariot with four horses, driven by the goddess of victory.
From 1961 to 1989 the Berlin Wall ran right past it, and nobody could walk through. When the wall came down, thousands of people celebrated here. Since then the gate has been the symbol of Germany becoming one country again.
